We made it! Brenda and I are currently lounging in our new apartment in Hamburg. It is an attic apartment in a neighborhood called Eimsbüttel. I arrived yesterday and Brenda joined me today. She was supposed to come with me yesterday, but she ended up having to sing at an opera donor's birthday party. It probably worked out for the best that she came a day later. The tenant that was in the apartment before me neglected to clean it before he left so I was able to get a little cleaning done before Brenda got here. Below are a couple pictures of the apartment. It's not big, but I think it will work well for me this fall.
Office, bedroom, living room, and kitchen all in one!

After I arrived in Hamburg yesterday I had to go to Bucerius (the school where I'll be studying) to pick up the keys to my apartment and to get my train/bus/boat card. I walked into the international office and started speaking in German to the woman who was there. We had exchanged e-mails before in English, but I figured since I was in Germany I might as well speak German. We started making small talk while I was filling out some forms, and I asked her if she was from Hamburg. She said, "No, I'm from Virginia." I smiled and said something like, "Well, then we should probably be speaking in English." It turns out that she married a German guy she met in the US and moved to Hamburg in 2008 - the same year that Brenda and I moved to Frankfurt.
I took Brenda to Bucerius today to show her the building and the surrounding area. There is a beautiful park right next to the law school called Planten un Blomen. It will be a great place to study if the weather continues to be as beautiful as it has been these last two days. Unfortunately, Hamburg isn't known for its great weather.

Brenda and I eventually made our way to the center of Hamburg. There are two connected bodies of water there: the Außenalster and the Binnenalster. You can read more about them here.
A picture of the Außenalster.
Our friend Ariane got married on Saturday, and I was able to go to the wedding (Brenda had a performance but was able to come to the reception and show everyone her awesome dance moves). It was a beautiful wedding, and a highlight was when Florian surprised Ariane (his sister) during the service. He originally wasn't going to be able to go to the wedding, but his schedule changed and it ended up working out. So instead of telling Ariane that he would be there, he surprised her by walking out from behind the church organ halfway through the service and singing a beautiful song. There were tears.

Well, my first day of orientation is tomorrow and it's getting late. I had better call it a night. I hope you all have a great week, and I'll talk to you next Tuesday!

Nice photos! You've got to watch your head when getting up, Chad. That inclined ceiling looks a little dangerous. :-) And way to go, Flo! What a beautiful surprise for your sister. (Smiles) Miss you guys!
You're not kidding about watching my head. I've banged my head against the ceiling more than once already. I hope things are going great in Japan! We miss you, too!
